What is a phishing link? Check an account message before you respond

· English

A phishing link directs you to a deceptive website that tries to obtain information such as your password. It may arrive in a message pretending to be a company or someone you know, including in gaming messages. Microsoft explains these warning signs.

Imagine receiving this message: “Your gaming account will close today. Verify here.” This is an invented example, not a report about an operator. Before deciding what to do, separate two questions: is there really an account problem, and is this the right place to resolve it?

Check the account through a separate route

Open the official app or a saved official website yourself. Contact support there, rather than using the contact details in the message. The FTC recommends verifying through a website or number you already know is real.

You could ask: “I received an account restriction notice. Is there a notice in my account?” You do not need to post your account screen publicly to ask that question.

Read the destination, not just the familiar name

The following addresses are illustrations only. IANA reserves example.com and example.org for documentation. They are not gaming services or links you need to visit.

Seeing a familiar name somewhere in an address does not identify the host. MDN explains the distinction between the domain and path. These simplified examples help you spot a mismatch; they do not certify a real link as safe. If the destination is unclear, use the separate official route.

If you already opened the link

Stop and distinguish what happened: viewing a page, downloading something, and entering a password are different events. This article cannot diagnose your device from a click alone.

Disclosed a password? Change it through the real service and anywhere else you reused it. Enable multifactor authentication where available. If banking details were shared, contact that provider. Microsoft’s recovery guidance covers these steps.

Suspect a harmful download? Update your security software and scan, following FTC guidance. Completing a checklist is not proof that an account or device is secure.

Keep the support conversation private

Record what happened and use verified support. Do not include passwords in a report. If you share an image publicly, use our gaming screenshot privacy checklist first. LaroAtlas explains checks; we cannot inspect your account or recover it for you.
